I think it should also apply to skin and mucous membrane products as these can sometimes end up in the mouth. I'm especially thinking of children with coeliac disease who may need to use skin or other products, such as lip balms. I have also heard that there have been some incidences of people reacting to gluten in skin products. As a Mum of a 7 year old child with coeliac disease, I would like to know where gluten is present. Children don't always do things to the same standard as an adult might (eg: handwashing) and they also play with modelling clay and things that could potentially contain gluten although these clays are seldom labelled. It's important for people to know which products contain gluten so that they can make informed decisions. I often put handcream on my son's hands at night. His hands inevitably end up near his face/mouth which is a huge risk if I'm putting a gluten containing product on his skin.

I believe people have the right to know what ingredients are in the medicines they are taking. People with allergies or health issues need to be able to make informed decisions about whether a medicine or product is safe for them. On a personal level, I have found it hard to work out whether certain products contain gluten. As my son cannot tolerate even a trace of gluten, I would like to see medicines and skin and mucous membrane products labelled, so that I can make an informed decision about whether these products are safe for my son. It is hard for people when they are unable to clarify whether a product contains a particular allergen, especially when that allergen could make them seriously ill. Many thanks.
