End of Life Choice Act Implementation - Expression of Interest for health practitioner lists

Closes 31 Aug 2022

Opened 18 Aug 2021

Thank you for responding to this request for expressions of interest for health practitioners willing to provide assisted dying services under the End of Life Choice Act 2019.

The Ministry has responsibility for implementation of the End of Life Choice Act 2019, which comes into force on 7 November 2021.  Part of the Ministry’s role is providing secretariat support for the Support and Consultation for End of Life in New Zealand (SCENZ) Group, a statutory body established under the Act.

The responsibilities of the SCENZ Group include making and maintaining the lists of health practitioners involved in providing assisted dying services and making contact details available for these practitioners as needed.

More information on the SCENZ Group can be found on the Ministry of Health website here: SCENZ Group information

If you have any questions regarding the questionnaire, please email EOLC@health.govt.nz

Why your views matter

The purpose of this expression of interest process is to begin making the health practitioner lists for the following three roles that are outlined in the Act:

  • attending medical practitioners
  • independent medical practitioners (to provide the 2nd opinion),
  • psychiatrists (to provide competency assessments where required)
  • attending nurse practitioners (to administer the medication)

More information on these roles can be found here: Practitioner Roles.

This questionnaire asks you to provide a range of information about yourself and indicate your preferences for your involvement in the provision of assisted dying services. The health practitioner lists constructed from this information will be held securely by the Ministry of Health and will not be made public. Your details will only be used for purposes related to the provision of assisted dying services.

This information will assist the secretariat in planning, but it does not commit you to being available for a specific case. The secretariat will always contact you for your agreement when assigning new cases. You will be able to make changes to this information at any time by contacting the secretariat. This includes indicating you no longer wish to be on the list.
